This was done by...
Open the image
Change to the Channels palette in the Layers palette
Find the highest contrast image (for this image it's the blue channel)
Use the magic wand select tool set to 40% and click on the largest black area
Change back to the layers palette
Copy and paste the selection to a new transparent layer
Hide the original image layer
Tidy the image up using the eraser tool to remove any of the red left in the image - you can add a new yellow layer under the transparency to make this easier
Copy that layer
Hide the transparency layer
Desaturate the top copy
Save the image
