By using various selctions and using the bright/contrast tools. Use of the clone tool and the smudge tool this image was produced...
It's not perfect and there are some parts in it that do not quite match up, but as new text is going on it, this can be corrected later
The final image. The font used was ferro rosso from http://www.dafont.com/ferro-rosso.font. A drop shadow was added to the text layer to get as close to the original as I could. The internediate image was good enough and so no more editing was done to it.
