Terre Haute has always had a rich educational background and the story of this school is just as interesting. High School classes were given in the old Hook School beginning in 1863, then in 1869 moved to Indiana State Normal School. In 1886, High School classes were moved from that establishment to the one pictured in the postcard, the new High School, which stood on the corner of Seventh and Walnut Streets.

The school was renamed the Wiley High School in 1906 to honour William H. Wiley who had retired as the superintendant of the city schools. The last class graduated here in June 1971 - the same year that Terre Haute South Vigo High School opened. Some of the same photographs were used on postcards for both the High School and Wiley High School - but with different captions. North Vigo and South Vigo high schools eventually replaced Wiley, Garfield and Gerstmeyer schools. The Vigo County Public Library now occupies the site with the Wiley High School cupola located on the grounds.

Indiana State Normal School has it's own interesting history. In 1929 it became the Indiana State Teachers College, in 1961, the Indiana State College before finally became Indiana State University in 1965.
