Although it's against the Terms and Conditions of most hosts to upload some file types some hosts actively prevent some file types from being used on their sites. Lycos UK seem to be most active in this and at various times have prevented most file types from being displayed properly. In October 2003 they prevented most audio file types from being used, and in March 2004 seem to have altered the MIME settings so that GIF, PNG and JPG images can only be downloaded as BMPs, thus destroying any special features of the file type, for example, animations and transparencies in GIFs.
