The original city centre would be the junction of Wine, Broad, Corn and High Streets. When the river was bridged over, done in stages in the last half of the 19th century, the area became the terminus of the tram system and so was known as the Tramway Center - usually now known simply as "The Centre". Other names had been suggested, such as the St Augustine's Open Space, the Drawbridge, Colston's Cross or City Garden - after the flowerbeds that were incorporated into the bridge.
