Optimizing Windows 11

for Performance

Introduction

I like Windows 11. As with most operating systems there are things I wish it differently or problems start occuring. This page was written to show some of the things I did to it to try and improve it or work my way through any problems.

In February 2026, I am using Windows 11 Pro 25H2 on a 2020 Dell Latitude 5590 laptop with an Intel Core i5-8350U @ 1.70GHz CPU, 1Tb Western Digital Blue SN570 NVMe drive and 32Gb of RAM.

Slow Right-click Context Menus

In January 2026, I noticed the right-click context menus were not appearing or responding as fast as they used to. I decided to see if I could improve their performance.

Windows 11 can be optimized for appearance or performance, or you can choose which features to enable. In the Task Bar search area type "performance" and one of the choices that come up should be "Performance Options" or "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows".

By choosing "Custom" from the Performance Options menu, various features can be turned on or off.

Some of the menu choices can be profound. In the above image I chose to turn on "Show thumbnails instead of icons" and "Smooth edges of screen fonts". Here is the difference of having those choices off and on:
