First organized around 1840, the first church was built at Seventh Street, just north of Wabash Avenue. The pictured church was begun in 1862 and finished in 1870. The bell tower was added in 1874 and the great hall and cloister room in 1891. In 1906, the original brick exterior was covered in Bedford limestone. There is a fuller history of this church on the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church website.
