The Model
I have another copy of this postcard that was posted in Terre Haute on May 15th, 1920.
The business was started with just three greenhouses off of South Seventh Street by the J. W. Davis Company in 1914. By 1962, the company had expanded to 60 acres of land occupied by 35 acres of greenhouses - the largest centrally heated greenhouse area in the world. J. W. Davis's daughter, Ruth, married O. Keith Owen who, in 1938, became company president. The Davises were the world's largest growers of cucumbers and they also had greenhouses at Aurora, Illinois; Kankakee, Illinois; and Glendale, California. The horticulturist in Terre Haute in 1958 was G. F. Warren who had been a professor at Perdue University, Lafayette, Indiana. The business closed in 1974 and the site is now occupied by the Westminster Village retirement community.
