Miscellany - a group or collection of different items; a mixture.
These pages are for topics that I find particularly interesting. Unfortunately, I've neither the time nor resources to research all of them more fully, but luckily, other people have made fascinating web sites on these subjects. I hope you find the choice of material here as interesting as I do.
Six Degrees of Separation :-
The idea of the "Six Degrees of Separation" is that through family, friends and acquaintances and their family, friends and acquaintances there are only six steps that separate a single person from any other person. I started off seeing what research has been done and, surprisingly, or perhaps not, there are people taking this extremely seriously.
Afghanistan :-
These are my own personal thoughts on the the events in the US since 11th September 2001. I know it's easy to criticize but that's one of the wonderful things about living in a democracy, we can do this, not like the people in other parts of the world.
Biological Warfare :-
Flying Sheep - A short history of biological warfare was originally written for the Alpha Phi Eta, the Terre Haute Ivy Tech chapter of Phi Theta Kappa - the two year college Honor Society. This essay can also be opened as a Word document for viewing or downloading.
Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race :-
I competed in this 125 mile endurance canoe race several times in the 1980's. Here's my thoughts on the first of them.
The Donner Party :-
Another television documentary bought this sad story to me. Looking for a new life in the West the Donner Party left Springfield, Illinois with 31 people and 9 wagons on 15th April 1846.
The Eastland :-
Walking along the Chicago riverfront we came across a plaque that described that on Saturday 24th July 1915, the Eastland capsized. 844 people died making it Chicago's worst ever disaster.
The Edmund Fitzgerald :-
In 1976, Gordon Lightfoot produced a song called "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". It's a haunting song, telling the story of the sinking of a ship and the death of her crew. It was years before I was able to find the story behind the song.
Great Britain, United Kingdom and the British Isles :-
Some notes on Great Britain, the United Kingdom and the British Isles, including the flags and icons.

K and M Class Submarines :-
I first came across the story of this ill-fated class of steam driven submarines in a book, "Lost at Sea" by John Harris and published by Methuen in 1990.

Murder
The result of a conversation in July 2003, this page gives the definition of several types of murder, both lawful and unlawful.
Plagiarism
This essay, "Plagiarism - Definitions, Penalties and Detection," was originally written for Alpha Phi Eta, the Terre Haute Ivy Tech chapter of Phi Theta Kappa - the two year college Honor Society. This essay can also be opened as a Word document for viewing or downloading.
Product Placement
This essay was originally written for an English class at Ivy Tech State College. This essay can also be opened as a Word document for viewing or downloading.
Racial Insults
This started off because of a conversation about the term Yanks, referring to Americans. After a bit of thought I decided to expand it a little. Don't worry, I'm not a racist and the page isn't designed to denigrate or insult any particular group of people. It's not even supposed to poke fun at anyone, it's just my thoughts on the subject.
Ten Plagues of Egypt
This article came about because of a television programme I saw on British TV sometime in the 1990's. The television programme explained that Doctor John S Marr MD., chief epidemiologist for the New York city department of health thought that he could give an explanation of the ten plagues that afflicted Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh was Ramasees II.
UK & US Flags :-
This started because of a trip to the George Rogers Clark Memorial on the site of Fort Sackville, Vincennes, Indiana on 17th November 2001 and the flags I saw there.
