Introduction

Kenmore over range hood, model 233.8498450
We have a Kenmore over range hood, model 233.8498450. It was installed around 1995. Thirty years later, in 2025, the light stopped working and then in May 2025, it stopped working altogether.
This is a good range hood and features an extractor fan, light over the cooker and a socket for a microwave.
An electrician friend took the control board out of the hood and said it was ruined and that he'd try to find a replacement, which he could not. I also tried and could not find a replacement. Now the board has gone missing.
Why do web sites say they have these replcement parts that appear in searches but when you visit them say they are "out of stock" or "unavailable"?
The Dimensions
The hood itself has a height of 30", width of 28.5", and a depth of 19.5". The width is important because the space it fits into is very specific, it fits exactly against the end wall of the kitchen.

The width of the kitchen range hood
It seems the Kenmore over range hood, model 233.8498450 was discontinued some years ago and we cannot find anything like it. It seems new cooker hood or under-cabinet microwaves are built to a standard width of 30", which means a new one is going to stick out from the kitchen side wall by 1.5" at more or less forehead level!
Another complications is that we have no idea of the condition of the wall behind the hood. We may have to get involved in refinishing the wall behind it.

It probably will not be possible for me to replace the control board or do anything in the space availble, so my plan is where the side panel is, is to add a variable fan control, either a slider or rotating knob, variable speed type. Add an electrical socket for the microwave. Remove the old fluorescent light along with its ballast and starter and replace them with a new LED light, with the switch for it, either by the light itself or near whatever I do to the side panel.
