Notice the name Gamecock on his cap ribbon in the left photo. This a reference to the Admiralty shore-based establishment or "Stone Frigate" HMS Gamecock located near Nuneaton, Warwickshire. In the 1930s, it was built for the RAF and named RAF Bramcote. On 1 December 1946, the airbase was transferred from No. 4 Group RAF to the Admiralty, and then known as Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Bramcote, The Royal Navy renamed it to HMS Gamecock on 3 December 1946. In 1959, the airfield was transferred to the British Army and known as Gamecock Barracks.

Roy served in the Flight Deck Division of HMS Warrior and was a Hookman. A hookman's job is to secure aircraft they have landed and clear the arresting wire off the deck.
