Hornung & Hahn
This matchbbok advertises the Hornung and Hahn shoe store that stood at 26 - 28 South Seventh Street. In particular it advertises the "British Walkers" line of shoes. The store's address dates the matchbook as between 1952 and 1956.
Horung's Shoes was founded in 1893 at 515 Wabash Avenue by Otto C. Hornung and Jacob Bernheimer. Horung was a travelling shoe salesman and manager of the Palace Shoe Store. Bernheimer dropped from the partnership fairly soon and the store moved to 655 Wabash Avenue. Otta Horung retired in the early 1930's and his son, Rahe, managed the store at 26 - 28 South Seventh Street.
Raymond H. Hahn moved from Chicago to Terre Haute and bering interested in foot care, especially the effects of ill-fitting shoes on children, became involved with the store through Rahe O. Hornung in 1939 when he leased the basement of the store to sell children's shoes.Hahn only sold good quality shoes such as Edwards, Jumping Jacks, Carpenter, Reider and Gerberich Payne.
In January 1945, the store expanded and the children's shoe section moved upstairs and featured a merry-go-round horse. The store was renamed "Hornung & Hahn" in 1952. Shortly aftwards Rahe retired but the Hornung name was kept. In 1956 it was one of the first retailers to move to Meadows Shopping Center with Ray's son, Rod, running the business. Earl Prewitt, who has been with the company since 1939 retired around this time. In 1967 it became "Hahn’s Shoes." The store finally closed in 1982. Ray Hahn died on May 9, 1987, aged 77.
